25-year-old Filipino graphic artist Allen Evangelista found the perfect side job to augment his salary from his day job. This new endeavor gave Allen a more stable financial status, giving him the confidence to make a life-changing decision -- proposing marriage to his girlfriend.

Allen’s interest in designing flourished in his college years when he became interested in animation and computer games. “I was curious about how the movies I watched and the games I played were even made,” he said. “Dota 2, Counter Strike, Grand Theft Auto, and Cabal were just some of the games I played back then.”

“During weekends, I could spend up to eight hours just playing video games and analyzing the 3D designs of the movies I watched. On weekdays, however, I only spent an hour or two on gaming… Well, it depended on the gravity of my homework.”

After graduating, he landed a job in a local advertising company. He has been working as an in-house 2D and 3D artist for the past four and a half years. Despite his full-time position, Allen wanted to earn more since he was just getting by with his earnings.

A year ago, a friend of Allen introduced him to Freelancer.com’s Contest platform. “I thought the platform was a mere hoax where you wouldn’t really be getting paid. But after seeing my workmate win a contest, I knew I had to give it a go,” he said.

Once signed up, he immediately scanned through the contests he could join. He found an employer in search of a company logo not long after. The Belgium-based employer allotted a budget of €10.

Allen completed the project in just a total of two to three hours, including the revision requests from the contest holder. He said that a couple of hours working on Freelancer projects and contest entries can earn him as much as or even more than the daily minimum wage in the Philippines.

He now has worked on several other projects and contests. Allen has widened his services by offering other kinds of design specializations such as photo editing, vector tracing, and t-shirt and brochure design. In a year’s span, he has already earned a couple thousand US dollars.

“Working on Freelancer has been life changing. I managed to save and even earn double or triple my regular salary. In the Philippines, getting employed is very hard and the salaries are very limited. But on Freelancer, if you’ve got the skills, you can make very good money,” said Allen.

Now that his finances were in check, Allen decided it was the perfect time to drop down on his knee and propose to Yana, his girlfriend.

He got the answer he was hoping for and is now engaged to be married.

“First and foremost, my Freelancer.com earnings are extremely important to me. It gave me the confidence to take a big leap. With it, I will be able to support my future wife and children.”
