After spending 12 years on a ship, Filipino freelancer Donny Factor stayed ashore to do what he loved most: design.

It was never Donny’s plan to end up as a freelance designer. The Romblon, Philippines native was gearing up for a career in engineering. He took up Agricultural Engineering in his locale’s state university, and despite his good academic showing, he had to put his studies on hold because of the financial crisis his family was going through.

To help with his family’s situation, Donny traveled to Manila in hopes of finding a job. He landed a job as a janitor in a well-known Filipino bank. After working for a year, his boss suggested that he should try going back to school. With the help of his boss, Donny applied for a scholarship and was awarded one.

He then took up Bachelor of Science in Nautical Navigation at the Philippine Merchant Marine School. After four years of part-time work and studies, he graduated and began his journey as a seafarer.

Donny has traveled all around the world in continents such as the Americas (South and North), Asia, Oceania, and Europe. He was earning US$1,400 monthly, which was significantly bigger than the paycheck of a typical Filipino employee.

Observing weather conditions, navigating through bodies of water, parking and driving cruise ships -- these were Donny’s everyday tasks for the next 12 years. Throughout his career, his yearning to spend time with his family grew more and more.

“We were allowed to call the Philippines while we were onboard the ship but it was very pricey. A minute-long call would cost US$4, which is why there were months wherein all I had was 30 minutes to hear the beautiful voices of my loved ones,” he said.

In 2014, Donny left the crew for good and stayed ashore with his family. He was in need of ways to earn now that he was back in the Philippines. He turned to Google for some answers and found Freelancer.

While studying the website, he noticed the huge number of design projects and contests. He wanted to bid on some of them but since he lacked the skills needed in some projects, he turned away for the time being and did some self-study.

“When I was younger, I was very passionate about the arts. Drawings always fascinated me, and so I drew. In high school, I took my art skills to the computer through Photoshop. However, I didn’t have exceptional equipment until I bought a good laptop during my years on board the ship,” said Donny.

He read a lot of materials on designing, watched series instructional videos, and practiced for countless hours until he was confident in his skills. Once he was ready, he bid on Freelancer.com projects.

Donny shared his experience on one very challenging project, where an employer preferred the use of Marvelous Designer, a design software Donny wasn’t familiar with. The project involved the 3D rendering of sports uniforms for the employer’s eCommerce website.

Instead of shying away from the daunting task, Donny proved to be the most worthy of candidates. He researched thoroughly about the new software and applied what he learned. Fortunately, his experience with other design software programs proved invaluable.

After completing the project, Donny’s employer released the payments and continued to hire him through the platform. The series of projects has earned Donny a total of US$5,000.

Working on Freelancer allows Donny to stay close to his loved ones and to continue earning hefty amounts. Aside from that, he also gets to do what he enjoys doing most.

Are you looking for an exceptional 3-D artist? Hire Donny, and check the ‘find the perfect 3D designer’ off of your to-do list.
