A young boy from Mercedes, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina spent hours on end learning new punk-rock songs to play on his old guitar. He and his friends would stay after school to jam out to the likes of The Offspring and Greenday. It was all about the music for Sebastian Alberto A. It was his lifeblood, his happiness, and inspiration.

His love for the art fueled him to learn even more instruments such as the piano, drums, cello, synthesizers and percussion instruments. Sebastian dreamed of turning his hobby into a career which was a pretty blurry vision at first, but he believed things would pan out eventually.

Determined to improve his skill set, he researched thoroughly on sound production -- from preparing beats to mixing melodies in post productions. He wanted to learn anything and everything music.

His hard work later paid off when he was hired by a local production house to work on the audio of advertisements and corporate videos. Everything was perfect except for the stressful schedules Sebastian was required to follow. The stress led to his resignation from the company.

Sebastian found Freelancer.com as a suitable replacement for his day job. “After quitting my previous job, I found Freelancer.com through Google. The opportunity to work independently was something I couldn’t pass up,” said Sebastian. “I found a blog where Freelancer.com was listed as the top freelancer platform worldwide, so I gave it a shot.”

He recalls his first project on the platform. It was with an employer from Tangerang, Indonesia. Sebastian was tasked to produce music and sound effects for an 8-bit video game. The three-week-long affair earned him US$155, which was a pretty hefty amount for a first project. Now with utmost confidence in the platform, he continued bidding for more and more projects.

Two years later, he received a phone call from one of Freelancer.com’s recruiters, asking him to bid for a certain project as a Preferred Freelancer. “Being called by one of Freelancer.com’s recruiters for a project was an unforgettable experience!” said Sebastian. “Having someone recommend me to employers is great! What can be better than that?!”

The good experience he had on Freelancer inspired his graphic designer wife, Mariana, to switch from corporate to freelance as well. She signed up a few years back but didn’t pursue the freelance lifestyle up until two months ago.

“After working as an employee for graphic design studios, I got tired of the long work hours and bad management. I wanted more freedom and time, especially since I am giving birth soon,” said Mariana. “I began my career on Freelancer through contests. I won the first three I joined.”

In just two short months, Mariana now has a regular Freelancer.com employer and her new lifestyle has been very beneficial for the pregnancy. “We are able to manage our time easily, plus our incomes have increased. Just last year, we traveled to Italy, Germany, and France for five weeks,” she added.

Sebastian and Mariana are looking forward to the birth of their first child. They, however, aren’t deterred because of the flexibility of time freelancing provides.
