The first project is a double clamp (Vice) designed to be used to clamp lumber (2X4) to 1-1/4" square railings and other similarly sized attachment areas. It must incorporate SAE bolts, nuts, etc for additional strength. Bonus if the files can be iterated a few times using FEA methods for more strength with Tough PLA or Carbon Fibre blended filaments to be used in FDM 3D printers.

    ANS: V-Grooves and other types of channels are common in vices. As long as it's not an angle greater than 45 degrees it should print well using a standard 3D FDM printer without using support materials.

    What is the purpose of the V groove?
    Also I think your second section view have some missing details or wrong.

    INSPIRATION - Here is a one piece solid hobby vice (too small for this contest, and not an assembly), but, you can see how it could work if making it larger, using off-the-shelf SAE bolts and nuts, and upgrading the design of the thin sections to be more robust.     hi I've seen the description of the project you are working on. but in the design sketch file that you attached, I don't understand the function of the components behind the clamp area.

      Hi Jilvan - Good question! If it's the side view (the right side of the drawing) then it's just two tabs for possibly mounting the top part of the vice directly to a surface (it doesn't HAVE to have this, but if they werea bolt on part/upgrade, even better). If it's the left side of the drawing, in front of the clamp is a double nut (one possible option) and at the back of the top clamp its a captured nut inside a two part jaw. If going this route (again, just one possible way to make it work) I'd suggest connecting the jaw using smaller nuts and bolts. This design allows you to clamp and unclamp without losing the large threaded nut inside the jaw, but, there might be a better way I've not thought of yet. Hope that helps you and everyone else out.

    OK- Clarifications. It is to be 3D Printed, therefore it must be able to be printed in parts, and assembled as a working, functional double vice. If you know anything about 3D printing, you know that you can embed or add parts (metal parts, like SAE nuts and bolts) to make the piece stronger and more functional. A typical inexpensive printer (Like the Creality Ender 3) can only print inside a 220mm X 220mm area at about 250mm high. My preference is to use the SAE bolts/nuts/etc. as not only a method of holding it together and making it stronger, but also as the main threaded part of the slide. The particular Panavise Ramon G chose (in comments) is not a great example, but it's larger version might be a good start for the top vice only, which must open up wide enough to clamp to a rough 2X4 (the 4" is actually 3.785" or less, so if it doesn't ACTUALLY open up to 4" I'll be ok with that since technically it will clamp to a 2X4). The lower vice must fit over a 1.25" square rail.
