AviationShake is a new startup based in east London, offering CV and interview skills for graduates and individuals wanting to enter or progress within the aviation industry.
What do we need?
A visual identity. We have a name, and a business model. We don't have an image. We need a logo, and design for our website, business cards, stationery.. you name it.
Who are we?
Mike & Jay (Jagoda, if she's being fussy). We're both industry professionals. I'm a pilot flying out of London City Airport, and Jay is an account executive for a ground handling company at London City. We've had this idea for nearly 6 months and we've finally decided to put our money where our mouths are. We're both young (well, under 30) and we're both passionate about the industry. I've a history in web design and development, as well as solid contacts within major recruitment training providers. Jay is a Master of Airline and Airport Management (literally - she graduated from the University of West London) - she's got the industry knowledge that'll really help us get a foothold and keep us going. We both play Squash. I LOVE Marmite, Jay HATES it.
Our industry?
We're highly focused on aviation - the sector provides some unique challenges and often an individual is faced with applications to huge, multi-billion £ companies. Big, impersonal corporate monoliths with 'corporate visions' and 'group strategies'. Yet, the industry is a small world, everyone knows someone who knows someone. It's the very king of highly-networked, multi-connected spaces. We believe that, outside of the well-known professions in the industry (ie: Pilots), there's little support out there for people hoping to raise themselves above the crowd. We hope to tap into this pool of self-motivated individuals who want to to go the extra mile (and yes, pay) to improve their chances of being selected.
What do we do, exactly?
We run workshops. Training for people to improve their chances of advancement. We provide professional training from instructors with years of experience, and great track records of improving CV and interview techniques. We also invite industry experts, movers and shakers to speak at the events and add valuable industry information for the attendees. The training aims to improve an individual's marketability within the industry - with a focus on getting them a new, first or better job. We'll also provide networking opportunities. At least, that's the vision.
When do we need it by?
ASAP! The sooner we have a brand, the sooner we can get out there and sell our model!
What, roughly, are we looking for?
We need a logo, website and stationery. We have an in-house development team to implement the design on the web so we're only after the design itself.
Style?
We're keen on minimalist design, clean and sharp - but we want to appear friendly and approachable.

How do you win the prize?
The design we pick will be quirky, memorable. It MUST scale well, and it must stand out. The winning design won't look like all the other cold-and-clean aviation industry logos out there. We're not keen on looking big and corporate, we're interested in appealing to individuals, not companies. Humour is definitely allowed - we're a strange bunch and we don't take ourselves too seriously. The winning design will reflect this.
What else?
The winning designer will become our go-to designer for future projects. We're not talking life-changing amounts of work here, we're not that big (yet!) - But if we like the design and we like you.. well.. makes sense, right?

  Dear Mike and Jay, as we have said before, it is a real pleasure to participate in this particular contest. As soon as we read the brief we have managed to get a glimpse of you both, personally and professionally, which gave us the idea of these two characters, different in appearances with the common passion. On the other hand, we are a couple as well, working together, being completely different, with different backgrounds, views, even different cultures, but with same interests and wish to escape the conventional.

  I think we went for that one because the ideas behind it were awesome. Basically, satgraphic took our brief and our communications on the contest to date and developed a logo/brand that was focused not just on what we're trying to do, but who we are.
  
  They drew influence from a lot of the other works on here - to be honest, we'd intended this. We wanted to provide lots and lots of open feedback in the hope that designers would browse the other entries as they were submitted and this would steer efforts.

  In short, we specifically ran the contest un-sealed to provide as much inspiration and guidance to entrants as possible. I grant that plagiarism was a risk of this approach, but we were happy that we could spot any we thought took the 'inspiration' euphemism too far.
  
  We're absolutely stunned by how much effort people put into this contest, and picking a single winner was possibly one of the single hardest decisions I've had to make. There was genuinely so much great work out there, from people like gerardway and Dokins and rogerolmarcos - great work coupled with brilliant engagement and communication. In the end, though, there could only be one winner.

Sorry for going dark for half a day folks - I had pilot things to deal with!

The contest is now closed - we can't thank you all enough for all your hard work, It's been a hell of a ride!

What happens now? Well, we've whittled the designs down to less than 5 that we really, really like - we're going to take a few days to discuss and develop the potential of each of these, plus seeking advice from some industry experts on what will suit our business plan best. When this process is complete we'll be back with you and awarding a winner! I'm hoping we'll complete our review and diligence before next weekend, maybe sooner.

You'll see us rejecting designs that didn't make the cut over the next couple of days - I'll try to comment on each and every idea with why it didn't make the cut. The quality of work is universally staggering, and we're gutted that we have to pick only the one entry.

More soon, and once again, thankyou all so much for your hard work!

  Thanks for your submission - I like what you've done with the text. However, for me, the logo has too many colours and doesn't really capture 'us'. The birds-eye view of a plane comes across as a little cliche for the aviation industry (go figure!) and so it's something we're trying to steer away from (unless, like in #107 , it's done very, very well).

  Thanks for all the hard work - I think we both prefer the earlier submissions from you #107 and #106 In fact, we're starting to close out the ones we'd "probably not" pick, and make a note of the ones we can actually see as our identity - #107 particularly is making the cut, and is in with a serious chance of winning.
  
  The only thing it's missing is some guidance as to how we'd apply that design online.
