I’m developing a small 'desktop ratcheting spinner device' intended for consumer market and need a draftsperson or engineer who can take my rough sketches and evolve them into production-ready documentation. The goal is to finish with a manufacturable design package that a contract shop can quote without further clarification. This design remit will be to design up to ten variants of the primary design. The primary design elements include a 'base,' a 'rotating shaft' and a 'knob' which, in combination, provide the user a fun, tactile and relaxing 'object' to play with while doing other tasks. Here’s what I already have and what I need from you: • Background & constraints – I will share 3D renderings and hand-drawn sketches plus a few mock-up photos that illustrate the look and feel I’m after. – The item must suit certain consumer expectations, so size, weight, tactile feel, and audible click matter as well as strength and cost. – I’m open to a mixed-material approach; plastic, aluminum and stainless steel are all on the table. - The 'knob' element can be plastic or metal and can be interchangeable by attaching and detaching from the rotating shaft. The knob design will be based on 'standard' knob design from companies like Chia Shin and mounting likely using T18 knurled shaft and/or D-shaft to the rotating shaft. There will be very limited design time associated with the 'knob' element since we will likely be using a standard knob design from one of the known knob makers. - The rotating shaft will need to be made from existing products and assembled, or designed, to include a bearing, attachment method to the base, audible and tactile 'clicks' on rotation etc. The method for attaching the knob to the shaft will need to be specified and will be the standard T18 knurled shaft or the 'd-shaft' configuration already in standard use by knob makers. -There may be some electrical aspect to one or more of the designs, for example LED lighting in the base. You'll need to design, draw and recommend the optimal combination for durability, cost, and assembly. • Scope of work – Design and refine the mechanism: confirm ratchet action and means to acheive it, tooth geometry, spring force, 'spin-ability' of the knob, and any detent features so the ratchet clicks positively yet remains audible. – Select and specify materials (including grades / finishes) that balance weight, corrosion resistance, and injection-molding, CNC and/or 3D printing costs. – Produce detailed 2D drawings with tolerances, GD&T where appropriate, and call-outs for surface texture or coatings. – Supply complete 3D models in STEP alongside native CAD files (SolidWorks or Fusion 360 preferred, but I’m flexible). – Provide a brief design-for-manufacture memo highlighting assembly sequence, recommended tooling, and critical inspection points. • Acceptance criteria 1. STEP assembly opens error-free in current SolidWorks. 2. All mating parts show clear tolerances; stack-up analysis keeps play under 0.1 mm. 3. Drawings use ISO or ASME Y14.5 symbols consistently. 4. Material specs and finish notes can be quoted by at least two vendors I already use. Please include examples of past ratcheting or small-mechanism work if you have it, and note which CAD platform you’ll use. I’m ready to start as soon as I see a compelling proposal. When you make your proposal please give me a range of time (in hours) you think it will take to design the first/basic model and the incremental time (in hours) it will take to design subsequent variations. These time ranges are ESTIMATES ONLY and do not form the basis of any fixed-pice or fixed-time contract. We have other product design ideas in the queue so successful work on this project will lead to further commissions.
