QUESTION: Many of the leadership styles you have come across in the module tend to be more successful in the short term but the emerging research and literature seems to demonstrate that a transformational style is much more effective for the longer term. By reference to leadership principles adopted by various business leaders, critically evaluate the evidence that transformational leadership impacts positively on employee motivation and organisational culture and thereby influences the success of the business. (1500 words) 1. The focus of the essay is NOT the LEADERS but “Transformational style of leadership”. What you are being asked is to provide the evidence to demonstrate that a Transformational style of leadership is more effective for business success, for the longer term, than any other style of leadership you have studied on the module. The leaders, therefore, become part of the evidence. So, the evidence will comprise of: - a critical analysis of different leadership styles……….. - as deployed by different business leaders……. - in the short/medium term and the longer term………. - with the aim of showing that the Transformational style is more effective for the longer term…………. - and where ‘effectiveness’ is measured by: 1) Business success: This in itself is nebulous. You will need to define your criteria for success – what exactly is it that’s being measured – examples of success are: improving market share, transforming loss to profit, driving forward a new vision, bringing about organisational change, etc. 2) Positive impact on employee motivation and organisational culture as contributors to the business success. 2. Analysis and discussion should be integrated with relevant literature. However, the assignment is not about the theoretical principles (i.e. defining them and explaining them) but about the application of the principles. The literature should be drawn from academic and prominent business texts, journals and publications.
