What is a Rhetorical Précis? A rhetorical précis is a structured, concise summary that evaluates both the content and the rhetorical strategies of a text. Its purpose is to clearly and concisely summarize how a text makes its argument—not just what the argument is. A précis helps readers analyze the author’s purpose, rhetorical strategies, and intended effect on the audience. Text for Analysis Use the following text to read and analyze for this assignment: Bill Taylor’s “A Letter to My Students”Links to an external site. Task Descriptive Paragraph (First Paragraph) In the first paragraph, you will describe the argument presented by the author. Your first paragraph should address the six issues below. You should NOT write the questions within your paragraph; however, your paragraph should be composed of sentences that answer these questions. You must use parenthetical citations when paraphrasing or quoting facts or opinions from your selected reading and/or any outside material used. What is the title of the reading, where and when was it published, and who wrote it? Establish the author's authority to speak on the subject. What evidence can you point to in the reading that establishes ethos? Paraphrase (explain in your own words) the author's main argument (do not use quotes). How does the author support this claim? What is the author's purpose, who is the author addressing (target audience) and what is the call to action? Describe the relationship the author establishes with the audience and specify at least one rhetorical strategy or device used by the author—ideally, strategies or devices that you believe the author uses effectively in the reading. To practice precision and brevity in your writing, try to condense these questions within your sentence structure. For example, questions one through three could possibly be answered in one well-constructed sentence. Evaluation Paragraph (Second Paragraph) In the second paragraph, you will evaluate the reading for the author's rhetorical strengths, strategies, and purpose. In this paragraph, you will address the following: What is your specific opinion of how the author presents their argument? (You are not giving your opinion on the topic but on the author's rhetorical merit. How persuasive is the author in their choices?) Evaluate the quality of the evidence used and reference particular types of reasoning (inductive, deductive, or analogical) and/or the overall effect of rhetorical strategies or devices used. How can this argument best be used and by whom? [login to view URL] for Success Length and Format Requirements: Your précis should consist of two paragraphs not to exceed a total of one full typed page double spaced, which is approximately 200-300 words. At the top of the page, provide a full citation of the text you are analyzing using the proper academic style guide chosen by your instructor. Use appropriate in-text citations for any quotes or paraphrases (Note: quotes and paraphrases should be kept to a minimum as the purpose of the assignment is for you to rely on your own writing skills as much as possible). Style and Tone: This is a structured assignment, and an academic or formal tone should be used throughout the final product. Avoid passive voice and phrases such as “I think” and “I believe.” Be confident in your description and evaluation. Reflection: After your work has been graded, reflect on your completed work. What strategies worked well, and what changes might you make in future writing tasks to improve your performance? What changes need to be made to your writing style? What strategies as a writer should be changed, developed, and/or eliminated? Grading Criteria: The assignment will be graded based on the following criteria: Citations (20%): The citations follow the style guide provided by the instructor and include all necessary details: author name(s), title, and publication information. A full citation is listed at the top of the page, and any quotes or paraphrases have appropriate in-text citations. Descriptive Paragraph (40%): The paragraph summarizes the author’s main argument clearly in your own words, avoiding excessive quoting or paraphrasing. It explains how the author supports their claim and identifies the author’s purpose, audience, and call to action. The content is focused, well-organized, and demonstrates strong comprehension. Evaluation Paragraph (40%): The evaluation focuses on the author’s rhetorical approach rather than the subject itself. It uses rhetorical terms appropriately, comments on the quality of evidence and reasoning, and explains how the source might be used in an argument. The paragraph reflects careful analysis and relevance.
