Writing an Argument Essay involves not only supporting the author’s position but also refuting opposing positions. An Argument Essay does not use just one mode of writing; it combines other modes in order to support a position. All the skills learned this semester can be used in writing the Argument Essay. Each paragraph needs examples to support the claims (Exemplification). At least two other modes should be used in your essay to support the thesis. For example, one body paragraph might use the strategy of comparing and contrasting or defining, while another paragraph might use a cause and effect strategy, etc. Remember that your audience may not see the same connections that you do; therefore, you must always show how your ideas relate to one another. As always, your final essay should be written in pen and on law/summary margin notebook paper.
One reason students learn to write in different modes in a composition class is so that the modes can be used as tools combined in an argument essay. The majority of college writing is done in the argument mode.
