GENERICS ACT OF 1988
The Generics Act or Republic Act No. 6675 was signed by President Corazon Aquino on September 13, 1988. It is a comprehensive national policy on pharmaceutical production and consumption issued due to the long list of discrepancies and inefficiencies from the manufacturer, distribution, pricing, prescription and using of regular drugs. In section six of the said act which is entitled “Who shall use generic terminology” imposed all medical science field to use generic names in all transaction. Companies and organizations involved in the manufacture, importation, repacking, marketing and/or distribution of drugs and medicine are required to indicate the generic name of their product. This created some resistance at first from private companies. The Generics Act would allow consumers to be aware of other alternatives and exercise his freedom of choice.
According to a survey conducted by WHO last 2009, 67% of Filipino respondents think generic medications are lower in quality and 90% think that generic medicine are lower in price compared to brand medicine. Since most of the public health care facility does not have or have limited supply of medicines this pushes people to buy medications from private facilities although perceived as more expensive. The high cost of medicine can also attribute to the non-completion or non-adherence to treatment protocol aside from the relief of symptomatologies of patients.
