What are the target specs: apparent image size (diagonal), image height above the aperture, primary viewing distance/FOV, color or mono, frame rate, ambient lux, and required contrast? Are there constraints on approach and safety: allowed methods (off-axis parabolic aerial image, HOE/combiner, LED fan, mist), bans on Class 3B/4 lasers or moving parts, and limits on volume, power, and noise? - Run a rapid trade of AIP mirror vs HOE combiner vs fan emitters, scored by etendue/brightness, FOV, occlusion, safety, and manufacturability to pick the best path before deep design. - Design for scale: stock optics with AR coatings and baffling, Zemax Monte Carlo tolerancing with alignment features, and a dual-source BOM to cut lead-time risk. Action Plan: - Phase 1: Requirements + success metrics; first-order radiance/etendue and contrast budget; down-select. - Phase 2: Ray-trace/photometric model; stray-light/ghost control; preliminary mechanical layout. - Phase 3: Draft BOM (vendors, PNs, coatings), tolerance stack, assembly/alignment plan; cost/schedule. - Phase 4: Optional breadboard to verify brightness/FOV/contrast; finalize feasibility report and production-ready BOM.
