For a local image model wrapped for two OSes I'd keep preprocessing server side and let the shell stay dumb, since a no-setup installer is the whole point and a thin shell is what stays reliably buildable across CI runners. Tauri over PyQt for the shell, mainly because the installer story is cleaner on both platforms and the binary stays small, with the FastAPI service running as a local sidecar process the app spawns and manages. The service handles preprocessing, inference against the existing model, structured error responses instead of raw stack traces reaching the UI, and rotating log files the app can attach to a bug report.
