Hi, The hard part in this kind of app isn't the feed or messaging UI, it's keeping in-app messaging and feed updates feeling real-time without draining battery or overwhelming the backend, since Firebase's default listeners can get expensive and sluggish once users have many active conversations and a growing feed simultaneously. ✅ On a social app I built with real-time feed and messaging both on Firebase, the real problem was exactly that, keeping open Firestore listeners for every conversation and the entire feed simultaneously worked fine with a handful of test users, but as usage grew, battery drain complaints came in and feed updates started lagging under the combined listener load. I fixed it by scoping listeners tightly, only actively listening to the currently open conversation instead of all conversations at once, paginating the feed with listeners limited to the visible range rather than the whole dataset, and detaching listeners properly on lifecycle events (app backgrounded, screen left) instead of leaving them running. ✅ After that, battery usage dropped noticeably, feed updates stayed responsive even as the user base and message volume grew, and the app didn't need a backend rewrite to keep scaling since the fix was in how listeners were scoped, not the platform itself.
