Bug fix for gas sensors

I have a program that communicates with some gas sensors by UART then transmits the data collected to the PC by serial communication. There is a bug in the program however that occurs when the gas concentration goes over 32,760 PPM (3.276%). This seems very likely to be an overflow error for an signed 16 bit integer. I am unfamiliar with C and can not find the 16 bit integer however.
The program runs on a PIC24FJ1024GA606. I am hoping to deploy these sensors for clients soon, so need this fixed quickly.
