### **REQUIREMENTS 1 outline**

### In this first PART, you are required to produce a **Requirements Outline** for the Management Support System known as MIDAS (management, information decision-making and support), presenting

? an brief analysis of the current business situation

? a brief analysis of any three of the management decisions (listed in the case study) and the associated information requirements

? a more detailed analysis of the information needs related to one of these decisions, which constitutes the requirements for your proposed MSS

? a description of the information already available

? a set of three sample database queries relevant to the decision you have selected

In the context of the case study, you should consider that you would be delivering this report to the MIDAS steering committee; it should therefore be presented in a professional manner.

### **General guidance (applicable to the whole document)**

In preparing your Requirements Outline, please note the following:

? Specific guidance on the structure and content of the document is provided below.

? You should also provide appropriate **title and contents** pages.

? All the section headings given below **must** appear in your report.

? The guidance below each section heading will guide you in developing the appropriate content for each section of the proposal: your task is to interpret this guidance and apply it to the case study in order to develop suitable content.

? The guidance itself should **not** appear in your report nor should you include any additional sections, though you may include sub-section headings of your own if you wish

? Please also take careful note of the "suggested length" quantity guidance, e.g. the Introduction section should be about ? page in length.

? Pages should be numbered; page numbers must be word-processed and match those given in the contents page.

### **Evaluation criteria**

It is expected that each report will contain **specific** statements which are:

? **relevant** to the case study

? supported by appropriate **justification** (where necessary)

? **corresponding** to the coursework specification

? forming part of a **sensible** outline of requirements

? **consistent** with other parts of the document

This assignment will receive formative feedback which should be used as input to the second assignment, **Design Specification with Software**. It is to be submitted by the date specified above. Please print your student numbers, your names and your CC3001 group number clearly on the **group coursework header sheet**; you must also sign the header sheet to indicate that you have read and understood the university's plagiarism regulations.

**Specific guidance (specifying each section of the report)**

Your **Requirements Outline** will include the following sections:

**Title page**

(1 page)

Must provide the following information: title of document, group number, names and student ID's of group members; you may use a logo if you wish. The title page should not have a page number.

**Contents page**

(1 page)

All sections of document listed with correct page numbers from the body of the report.

**Introduction**

(suggested length: ? page)

Provide a coherent introduction to this document: give a clear statement of the purpose of the document; briefly outline any relevant background information; include a list of any related documents and sources of information you have used (using the Harvard Referencing Style where appropriate).

**Current Position Analysis**

(suggested length: 1 page)

Provide a brief analysis of the current business situation at Marian Haste UK Ltd: you should use one or more recognised strategic planning technique(s) (e.g. SWOT analysis); clearly identify the company's business objectives.

**Outline Management Decisions**

(suggested length: 3 pages; approx. ? page per decision, on separate pages; add 1 paragraph to the appropriate page for discussion of selection/justification)

Briefly discuss any **three** of the identified management decisions at Marian Haste UK Ltd. For each decision, you should:

? briefly discuss this decision in the context of the current position analysis

? identify the stakeholder(s) for this decision and their critical success factor(s)

? outline the information requirements of managers faced with making this decision

In this section, you **must** identify which **one** of these three decisions your MSS will support; offer brief justification for this selection.

**Detailed requirements**

(suggested length: 1? pages)

Clearly identify the data required to support the decision you have selected: you should be able to identify specific tables and columns within the COCOA POPS database, though you may also wish to identify other data, including sources outside the organisation.

You should also outline the transformation processes that will be required to convert this data into the information needed by the decision maker(s). Consider any or all of the following: classification, rearranging/sorting, aggregating, performing calculations, selection, summarising.

**Management Information**

(suggested length: 3 pages, i.e. 1 page for the ERD and 2 pages for the data dictionary and other written description)

Describe the management information available at Marian Haste UK Ltd.: include an entity-relationship diagram (ERD) and data dictionary for the COCOA POPS database (identifying primary and foreign keys); you should also consider what other information will be available to managers within the organisation.

Note: your ERD must **not** be a screen dump from MS-Access.

**Sample queries**

(suggested length: N/A; these should be provided in a working software version of the .mdb database file on CD)

Provide **three** sample database queries providing data relevant to the decision you have selected. Give clear instructions on how these are to be used.
