Realistic Children's Storybook Illustrations

Illustration Brief – What Breed? Cattle About the Book What Breed? is the first in a series of children's books introducing different livestock breeds through a gentle adventure on our real family farm in the Peak District. It is written for children aged approximately 2–7 and follows a little boy, his baby sister and their Grandad as they spend a morning exploring the farm together. The story is inspired by my own children, my own Grandad, our family farm and the countryside where we live. Although the illustrations don't need to be photo-realistic, they should feel like genuine people rather than generic storybook characters. This is not simply a book about cows—it is about family, farming, curiosity and spending time together. Overall Style I'm looking for illustrations that feel: Warm Timeless Full of character Authentic Rich in atmosphere Detailed enough that children can keep discovering new things The illustrations should sit somewhere between realistic and painterly. I don't want cartoon illustrations or exaggerated Disney-style characters. Think: beautiful countryside believable people expressive faces soft textures natural lighting pages children want to study over and over. Each page should feel like a painting rather than clip art. Setting The book is set on our real farm in the Peak District, England. The landscape is an important character itself. I'd like authentic details including: dry stone walls rolling limestone hills old stone barns wildflowers muddy tracks farm gates stone field shelters old oak trees sheep fields real working dairy farm buildings tractors and machinery appropriate to a British dairy farm. Nothing should feel American or overly polished. It should feel lived in. Characters The illustrations are based on my real family. Reference photographs will be supplied. The illustrator should keep recognisable features while giving them a timeless illustrated appearance. Grandad Grandad is the heart of the story. He isn't loud or silly. He's a man of few words with a gentle humour. He rarely smiles widely, but his warmth is obvious. He wears: baseball cap practical farm clothes boots weathered hands relaxed posture Children should instantly feel safe around him. The Boy Around four years old. Curious. Always asking questions. Excited by absolutely everything. Very expressive. He should often be pointing, crouching, peering over walls or looking amazed. Baby Sister Around one year old. Not walking yet. Mostly crawling, sitting, standing holding onto things or being carried. Very smiley. Always watching what's happening. She isn't just "there"—she reacts to the adventure in her own way. Animals Accuracy is incredibly important. The cattle should look like their breeds. The sheep should behave like sheep. The farm should function properly. Examples include: calves inside a calf creep lambs escaping through realistic gaps dairy cows in an abreast parlour correct gates and fencing correct farm vehicles The story is based on real farming, so authenticity matters. Storytelling The illustrations should tell as much of the story as the words. Every spread should include little details children can discover. Examples: birds flying overhead rabbits butterflies calves peeping hidden cats muddy footprints chickens tools dogs little background jokes Children should enjoy revisiting every page. Interactive Guessing Book This is not simply a story. It is also a guessing book. Before every breed reveal, the illustration should encourage children to study the animals and guess the answer. The breed should be clearly visible without making it feel like a textbook. The picture should invite observation. For example: "Can you see why this cow is called Belted Galloway?" or "Look carefully... what makes this one different?" The illustrations should support the guessing game rather than simply decorate the text. Sound Words Throughout the book there are sound effects which should become part of the artwork rather than simply printed text. Examples include: RUMBLE... CRUNCH... HUMMM... HISS... CLANG... MUNCH... These should weave naturally through the illustrations. For example: tyre tracks throwing up CRUNCH... the milking parlour humming HUMMM... trailer gates banging CLANG! cows chewing with MUNCH... The typography should become part of the scene. Page Layout Illustrations should leave breathing room for text. Text should never sit over busy areas or across important faces. Each page should naturally guide the reader's eye through the illustration and towards the page turn. Double-page spreads should feel like one continuous landscape rather than two separate pictures. Tone Above everything else, I want children to feel like they are coming on a real adventure with Grandad. The book should make readers wish they could climb into the pickup, explore the farm and spend the day asking questions. It should feel cosy, adventurous, educational and full of love. The Most Important Thing This book is a love letter to my family, our farm and the way farming knowledge is quietly passed from one generation to the next. While it teaches children about cattle breeds, its heart is the relationship between a curious little boy, his baby sister and their Grandad. If a child finishes the book wanting to go on a farm adventure with their own grandparent—and feeling that every breed, every person and every animal has something special to offer—then the illustrations will have captured exactly what I'm hoping to achieve.
