The painters who followed the techniques of impression were quite vocal in their disavowal of any interest in philosophy. Yet the art they espoused had quite far-reaching philosophical implications. The view that the impressionists assumed was markedly different from those that prevailed among artists generally. With this view, they were able to unify artistic works created in the new style. With the ancient Greeks, the world was conceived of in concrete terms with even the abstract qualities being endowed with bodies. This Greek notion of matter persisted well into the nineteenth century. With the Impressionists this changed with them viewing light and not matter as the ultimate visual reality. Taine, a philosopher, while speaking of the view of things, expressed his Impressionist outlook, “the chief ‘person’ in a picture is the light in which everything is bathed.” Solid bodies, in impressionist painting became mere reflectors of light and the distinction between two bodies became arbitrary conventions.
