""How to change your car’s oil filter
A defective oil filter may be the cause to a number of car malfunctions, due to the carbon particles allowed to penetrate its engine, making regular oil filter changes a vital part of any routine vehicle maintenance.
It may look simple enough, but changing a car’s oil filter requires a step-by-step procedure to ensure desired results. Failure to follow said procedure may cause damage to the vehicle’s oil pump or any of the surrounding parts.
Before commencing any work, it is advisable to put on protective gloves and eyewear.
Start by locating the device, which is typically situated in proximity to the engine oil pan. Remove the oil filter by way of unscrewing it in an anticlockwise motion with the appropriate locking wrench. Any oil remaining in the filter should be drained into the oil catch pan, following which the filter seal surface requires thorough cleaning, while the old sealing gasket can now be detached from the filter seat.
Apply a small amount of oil to the new oil filter’s rubber gasket before inserting the filter itself, turning it clockwise until it is firmly secured in its designated place.
Unfasten the plug closing the oil pan’s drain, using the boxed end of the wrench, or alternatively a socket wrench to prevent any deformation of the plug. Once the plug is dislodged inspect the sealing washer for any wear and tear, as a worn out sealing washer needs to be replaced. Drain the remainder of the oil before resealing the oil pan, without tightening the plug unnecessarily forceful. Examine the drained oil for particles and discolouration, as too dark and unclean motor oil requires a thorough service to prevent further damage.
After the oil filter change is completed, the drained motor oil has to be replaced.
The fill port, usually clearly marked, is situated atop the engine’s valve cover, but it may be in a spot difficult to reach, which can be remedied by using a funnel. Fill up as indicated in car’s manual or an approximate four litres and replace the port’s cap. Start the car’s engine and let it run for one minute before switching it, allowing for the oil to settle for about two minutes before checking the oil level with the dipstick. In case the indicator shows an insufficient oil level, add oil as required.""
