I’m building the OpenGL ray-tracer at [login to view URL] and need the classic WASD camera controls working. At the moment only the Escape key closes the window; nothing else moves the viewpoint. What I suspect is missing is a proper view matrix (or equivalent camera logic) wired to keyboard input, but I’m open to whatever solution you find cleaner. The goal is straightforward: press W, A, S or D and see the camera move correspondingly inside the existing scene, with smooth, frame-rate-independent motion. mouse already works. Please work directly in the current C++/OpenGL codebase, keep the external dependencies unchanged, and return: • Updated source files with clear comments on the sections you touched

Hello, I understand your requirement: the existing OpenGL ray-tracer already has mouse camera control, but WASD keyboard movement is missing. The goal is to integrate smooth, frame-rate-independent camera movement into the current C++/OpenGL codebase without changing external dependencies. My solution: Review the current camera and rendering pipeline to identify the missing movement logic. Implement proper WASD input handling for forward, backward, left, and right movement. Connect keyboard movement with the existing view matrix/camera system. Ensure smooth motion using frame-time based updates for consistent behavior at different FPS. Keep the current architecture unchanged and add clear comments to all modified sections. I have experience with C++, OpenGL, graphics programming, and camera/view matrix implementations. I will carefully work within your existing codebase and provide clean, maintainable source changes. I can quickly identify the issue and deliver the updated files with the required functionality. Looking forward to working on your ray-tracer project.

Hi, Can start now, $30, done in an hour or two. Good news is the hard part is already there: your mouse look works, which means the camera has an orientation (a forward/right basis) and a view matrix being built each frame. So WASD isn't new camera logic, it's just translating the camera position along those existing basis vectors (forward/back on W/S, strafe left/right on A/D) and feeding the updated position back into the same view matrix the mouse already drives. I'd wire the key state into that instead of one-shot key events, so holding a key gives continuous motion rather than a single step. The bit you specifically flagged, frame-rate-independent motion, is the detail that matters: movement has to be multiplied by delta-time each frame, otherwise the camera moves faster on a fast machine and slower on a slow one. I'll compute a per-frame delta and scale movement by it so speed is consistent regardless of frame rate, which is what makes it feel smooth. I'll work directly in your existing C++/OpenGL code, leave the external dependencies untouched as you asked, and return the updated source with clear comments on exactly what I changed. 15 years of C++ including plenty of OpenGL and camera/view-matrix work. Anything on movement feel you want, fixed speed, or a run/sprint modifier? Karol

Adding WASD movement to your raytracer at netpipe/OpenGL-Demos means building a proper view matrix driven by keyboard state and wiring it into the existing render loop without disturbing the mouse look that already works. The plan: track key-down state for W/A/S/D, compute frame-time-independent movement along the camera's forward/right vectors, and update the view matrix each frame before the scene draw. Since mouse rotation is already functional, camera orientation stays untouched — only translation gets added, keeping the change minimal and easy to review. Comments will mark exactly which sections were modified so you can verify quickly. Ready to dive into the repository and get WASD moving today.

Hello, the issue is not simply detecting WASD input; the important part is connecting that input to the existing camera orientation and movement so the ray traced scene responds correctly without breaking the mouse controls. I would first trace the current input, camera state, and rendering pipeline to understand how the existing mouse look is implemented. Then I would add the missing camera movement using the current coordinate system and view transform, keeping W and S relative to the viewing direction and A and D relative to the camera right vector. Movement would use frame delta time so speed remains consistent across different frame rates. I would keep the existing dependencies and scene architecture unchanged, with clear comments only around the modified sections. I would also verify diagonal movement, simultaneous key presses, mouse interaction, and movement at different frame rates before returning the updated source. Is the current mouse control already updating a camera position and orientation, or is the viewpoint handled directly inside the shader? Best Regards, Farhan
