Birdwild is about an African-American woman raised in the South during segregation and the Civil Rights movement. Bree the main character witnessed the physical and emotional abuse. Her sense of abandonment servers as inspiration.
Birdwild is set in a small rural town in Shellsville, SC, beginning in the early 1950s when the South was struggling with racial segregation. Bree’s story travels through her childhood with an unscrupulous abusive father who is a ruthless drug dealer and womanizer, and her mama who holds her at arm’s length denying her the love Bree so desperately needs. Bree senses that this family withholds big secrets from her. It isn’t until Bree’s mama frees herself from her husband, and Bree learns who her real mama is, that they all are finally free.
Birdwild is 68,355 words and is the first book in a series of three.
