initiative has been launched for a declining industrial area of London next to the
River Thames. The development is intended to provide a mixture of housing
types to accommodate 200,000 people. Working with the developers, We have
agreed a route for an underground line extension, with three new stations. The
road network for the area will need to be completely redeveloped and upgraded.
You are the engineer working on the project responsible for upgrading the
inadequate power infrastructure for the area, so will need to consider:
a. The factors and key options when designing the power supply infrastructure
b. How you would change your power infrastructure design if asked to minimise or
tightly limit the carbon dioxide emissions
c. Advise on the provision of fully automated, software-based, control systems for
the power distribution system within the area, the issues that might be raised in
safety terms and how they might be overcome
d. To economise on infrastructure costs, it is proposed that the power distribution
cabling, systems control cabling, and the data cabling to and from a merchant
bank within the development be run in a common duct. What concerns does this
raise, and how might they be overcome?
