This Adapter is mainly to be used with 1980’s computer and game consoles, the Apple II series in particular. The Adapter should be able to take NTSC and PAL Composite Monochrome, Composite Color, Digital RGB (CGA), and Analog RGB, and covert it to HDMI. It should also have a mono and stereo audio in/output.

The Apple II series of computer has an odd video standard. Their Composite, PAL, and Analog RGB output is slightly different than what the industry standards were. This needs to be accounted for in the Adapter’s design. Differences are documented online, and I can provide additional links and clarification if needed. The slightly lower video frequency standard isn’t a major issue however. I even had a working project that deal with Apple II to VGA back in 2009.

This project MUST be able to reproduce NTSC/PAL video artifacts, also called “color fringing”, when displaying color on a modern display. In short – this means when one color pixel was displayed adjacent to another color pixel, a third color would be produced. Many programs and games used this feature to expand the limited color pallets available on the old computers. Newer video standards from RGB to present do not have “color fringing”.

There is an existing project called RGB2VGA that is open source and does at least 90% of what’s needed. You goal will be use this existing project as a guide and to add Apple II support. I also have some ideas already laid out in a schematic design in KiCAD for your review. We can also review my past project from 2009 if needed.

See attached Project Scope doc for full project details. This really should be a very simple project however I don’t have the time currently to complete it alone.
