The goal is to create an inexpensive, child-safe handheld that lets 7- to 9-year-olds ask “What does ____ mean?” by speaking or typing, then hear and read a short, age-appropriate definition. I already have the general concept—plastic-screen enclosure, simple UI, and on-device dictionary dataset—but I need an end-to-end working prototype. Core functions • Dual input: a small membrane keyboard or touch keypad for typing plus a noise-tolerant microphone for voice commands. • Dual output: the answer scrolls across the plastic screen while a tiny speaker reads it aloud in clear, child-friendly language. • Local processing preferred (Raspberry Pi Zero, ESP32, or similar) to keep costs low and avoid connectivity dependencies, yet Wi-Fi or BLE firmware updates are a bonus. • Rugged, screw-together housing that can survive backpack drops; 3-D printable STL files are fine. • Power via rechargeable Li-ion or AA cells with simple USB-C charging. Deliverables 1. Fully assembled, tested prototype showing the above workflow. 2. All source files: hardware schematics, PCB Gerbers (if used), STL/STEP enclosure, and well-commented firmware. 3. Bill of materials with vendor links and per-unit cost estimates aimed at a low-volume run. 4. Video or live demo proving voice and typing inputs both return synced audio-text explanations. Acceptance will be based on reliable recognition of at least 200 common vocabulary words, audible clarity in a noisy room, and smooth scrolling text on a daylight-readable screen. I’m ready to iterate quickly and can flash firmware or print enclosures on my side if you prefer to focus on electronics and code.
