Both files hold financial data, so the failure that matters here is the one that does not throw an error. Matching on WBS is where these go wrong. WBS codes come out of SAP and similar systems as text, and Excel does not reliably keep them that way. Leading zeros get stripped, anything shaped like 1.2 turns into a number, some formats get read as dates, and exports routinely carry trailing spaces. Any one of those and the key stops matching. The lookup does not fail, it simply finds nothing, so the Amount quietly keeps its old value and the file looks completely fine. On financial data that is worse than a crash. So I normalise both key columns first, force to text, trim, strip non printing characters, then hand back the unmatched WBS values as an explicit list rather than letting them stay silent. Second thing the brief does not settle. If the source has more than one row for the same WBS, what should happen? A plain lookup takes the first and ignores the rest, which understates the total without telling anyone. Sum, latest, or flag as ambiguous, your call, but it has to be decided rather than defaulted. On SharePoint I would work through the Graph API or on a checked out copy rather than editing a synced file in place, so nobody ends up with a conflict copy. Your reconciliation goes wrong on the WBS key long before it goes wrong on the amounts, because codes coming out of an ERP export carry trailing spaces and nonbreaking characters and a few get quietly coerced to numbers by Excel, so a straight lookup misses those rows and hands back a blank that reads like a zero once it's sitting in a financial column. First thing I do is build a normalized key on both sides, trimmed and forced to text, and match on that, and then I count how many source rows each WBS has before any join runs, because when a WBS appears twice a lookup takes whichever row it hits first and the Amount comes out short with nothing to show that it did. The work sits in Power Query pointed at the SharePoint files so it refreshes when the source changes and doesn't depend on me being in the workbook, and you get a small exceptions tab listing every WBS that matched nothing or matched twice, so you can check the numbers before anyone books them. One honest limit, I work in Power Query and formulas and not in VBA, so if you want a macro button inside the workbook that isn't me. Does a WBS ever land on more than one row in the source file, and if it does, should those amounts be summed or is the latest row the true one?
