I would like you to write a rhetorical analysis of a feature-length documentary. The documentary can be on any topic, but it should make an explicit (direct) or implicit (indirect) argument of some kind (almost all documentaries do).
In your rhetorical analysis, explore why this documentary is effective or persuasive with its target audience (or perhaps why it fails). For example, you might explore why a documentary like Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine is persuasive for some audiences and not effective for others. Or, you might explore why Border War: The Battle Over Illegal Immigration is popular among conservatives.
Your rhetorical analysis should describe/summarize the documentary and offer relevant background information about the people involved in its making. Then, use the rhetorical concepts we’ve discussed or read about to analyze the way the film makes its argument. You may need to briefly define these concepts.
Later in your rhetorical analysis, you might offer a broader discussion of why documentaries like the one you studied are effective or ineffective. What do these documentaries show us about human nature, our political system, or our culture? What kinds of broader conclusions can we draw from documentaries like the one you chose?
Your rhetorical analysis should be written to appear in a popular print or online magazine like [login to view URL], National Review Online, Newsweek, Time, or Forbes. Adjust your writing style to fit the kinds of people who read the magazine in which your analysis would appear.
In this assignment, your objectives are to demonstrate that you can—
Write a thorough rhetorical analysis that closely analyzes a subject
Define a subject
Develop and use a solid main point (i.e. thesis statement)
Use a clear introduction, body, and conclusion to organize your writing
Interpret the rhetorical elements of a text
Use plain sentences that clearly state your ideas
Do background research to support your claims
Explain why a text is persuasive or effective (or not)
Your rhetorical analysis must be between 800 and 1,000 words, and it should include images. Please use an interesting title and make sure your name appears at the top of the first page. Identify which print or electronic magazine you are writing for in the heading.
