I need a 1099 contractor who can commit 20-40 hours a week to split their time between a brand-new Rails API with a React front-end and an older legacy Rails monolith. Both codebases matter equally to the business, so you’ll be jumping back and forth—building fresh features in the greenfield project while keeping the legacy app functional and stable. We’ll kick things off with new feature development. The exact specs are still loose, so I’ll rely on you to help shape requirements, challenge assumptions, and translate rough product ideas into well-scoped user stories. Clean, well-tested, idiomatic Ruby and modern React are the baseline; RSpec, Jest/Testing Library, GitHub pull-requests, and CI/CD (we use GitHub Actions) are part of the day-to-day workflow. Deliverables I expect each week: • Pull requests for each feature with meaningful commits, passing tests, and clear documentation • Short Loom or written walk-through explaining the business logic and any schema changes • A brief end-of-week summary so we stay aligned on priorities and next steps If you enjoy switching contexts, writing maintainable code, and collaborating to define features from scratch, let’s get started.

Rails + React split between greenfield and a legacy monolith is exactly the kind of setup I work well in. I'm comfortable building new API endpoints while also maintaining older Rails code - jumping between the two is just normal product work. I work async-first so timezones aren't an issue. Happy to start with a small scoped task before committing to a bigger engagement, just to make sure we're a good fit. Quick question: is the legacy app running on an older Rails version that needs careful handling, or mostly just feature work on a stable codebase? - Usama

Hi, This role fits well with my background. I’ve worked on Rails monoliths while building newer API based architectures with modern frontends, so switching between legacy stabilization and greenfield feature work is something I’m very comfortable with. I write clean, idiomatic Ruby, keep PRs small and meaningful, and treat tests as part of the feature, not an afterthought. I’m also used to shaping loose product ideas into scoped user stories and documenting business logic clearly, including async walkthroughs when needed. Happy to commit 20 to 40 hours per week and start with a feature to demonstrate workflow and code quality.

Hello, I’m very interested in this engagement and comfortable splitting time between a greenfield Rails API with a modern React front-end and a legacy Rails monolith. I’ve worked in similar dual-codebase environments where part of the week is focused on shipping new features with clean architecture and strong test coverage, while the other part is dedicated to stabilizing and incrementally improving older Rails systems without introducing regressions. I write idiomatic Ruby, keep controllers thin and business logic well-encapsulated, and rely on RSpec for backend testing and Jest/Testing Library for React components. I’m used to GitHub PR workflows, meaningful commits, schema migrations with clear rollbacks, and CI/CD pipelines via GitHub Actions. I’m also comfortable helping shape loosely defined specs into actionable user stories, challenging assumptions early, and documenting trade-offs so the business stays aligned with technical decisions. You can expect consistent weekly pull requests with passing tests, clear documentation, short Loom or written walkthroughs, and an end-of-week summary outlining progress and next steps. I’m available for 20–40 hours per week as a 1099 contractor and ready to get started. Best regards, Juan

Hello You need a 1099 Rails + React developer to split time between a new Rails API/React app and a legacy Rails monolith, shipping well-tested features while keeping the older system stable. I’ve worked in a similar setup where I built new API endpoints in a Rails service while maintaining a legacy monolith, delivering weekly PRs with RSpec/Jest coverage and clear walkthroughs for schema and business logic changes. I’m comfortable shaping loose specs into scoped stories and working in a GitHub Actions CI flow. One technical question: are both apps on the same Rails version, or will part of the work involve upgrading the legacy monolith? Best, David
