I need help with design and layout of a web form that allows for the adding, editing and removing of inventory/menu items. This includes categories, sub-categories, menu items and components that relate to menu items. This is not a design project for an entire website, it's just one form that will eventually exist within a website. The form should consist of an area to the left (like a sidebar) that has buttons/links labeled for things like 'Categories' and 'Menu Items'. When you click on each of those items, the default viewing screen should appear in the main area of the form. I'm looking for help with both the user interface and user experience.
To illustrate, I will use 'Categories' as my example since it will be the simplest and represent the first step for this project. This screen should be simple and show a listing of all existing categories. Somewhere on the form should be buttons that allow for editing and removing the selected category as well as an option to add a new category. Edit and adding should use the same UI, except with editing it will be pre-filled with the category in question. This add/edit UI should be a modal pop-up, possibly with 'Next' and 'Back' buttons to allow for a wizard-type work flow.
I can provide screen shots from an existing Java application that will give you an idea of what information needs to be captured, but I don't necessarily want to emulate the look and feel of the screen shots. I'm looking for someone to help establish a look and feel to the form and its sub components. I propose we start off small with just the primary look and feel along with the category view/add/edit/remove work flow. If this part comes together nicely we can move forward with the rest of the web form.
The scope of the project will increase a lot upon successful completion of this first task, which includes the design and implementation of a basic web form as described above.
