Education Kit: Learn About Colours

Roylco designs, develops, manufactures and markets educational materials for young children, 3 to 8 years old. We have 400 products ranging from art materials, crafts and building blocks to scientific posters and exercise equipment. Our goal is to produce materials that encourage children to "learn with their hands." Our corporate motto is: Roylco, Learn to play; play to learn. [login to view URL] Currently we are working on a simple product to teach children about colours. We need to work with a designer with a keen eye for colours and a general understanding of the kinds of things kids enjoy doing. This kit will be purchased by primary grade Art Teachers. The first element we need is a list of 30 Pantone colours converted to CMYK. This list must include white at one end of the spectrum and black at the other end. Each of the colours needs a name (in English). As an example (we don't need to use these particular colours), we would like something like Burnt Sierra, Periwinkle, Chartreuse, etc. We do not want names like "Barbie Pink." For this element, I would like a document with a "rainbow" of colours in boxes along the top with the name of the colours written below each one. We will digitally print these in CMYK. Normally we would offset print this using spot colour, but because of the low volume/high cost production, we want to do a small run digitally. We will print these on "Swatch Cards" which children can arrange and rearrange in any order they want. We have a range of activities using these swatches to inspire children to think about colours a little differently (or at least with more sophistication). Next, we need 16 illustrations, 5.5 x 8.5", using the colours specified above so children can match the swatches to the colours printed on the illustrations. I envision a thick black line separating the colours almost like a colouring book. In first set of four illustrations we want to use just 3-4 colours. These need to be very simple with thick black lines around each element. In the third set of four illustrations, we want to use 8-10 colours. In the final set of four illustrations, we want to go as wild as possible! These illustrations can be a more colourful or you can select wild colour combinations that may not be obvious to most people. Finally, we want 10 simple shapes that relate to colours. We will die cut out these shapes a little smaller than our colour swatches and encourage students to select colours that relate to the shapes. They will place the colour swatches behind the die cut shapes to see if the colours are appropriate to the shapes. Note: we are looking for shapes that can be more than one colour. For instance, something like a "Stop Sign" (octogon) shape has only limited use. It really only works with red. Something like an apple shape, can be used with a range of different colours, like red, green, pink, yellow, etc (See this site for colour reference: [login to view URL]). Because we are cutting out these shapes, they need to be simple. The finished size of the swatch smaller than 5 x 7 cm (2 x 2.75"). To recap: We need 30 colours, names of each colour, 16 illustrations, 5.5 x 8.5 cm with black outlines, and 10 simple shapes that relate to as many colours as possible. We are looking for a designer than understands children and is keenly aware of colours. In addition to this colour set, we are looking to do three more sets that are similar but relate to different areas of the curriculum, for instance, the alphabet (we will need 26 drawings that relate to the letters) shapes and simple science concepts.
