Linux/OpenVPN/Samba File-Sharing Over VPN

Provider Requirements

The provider for this project must be a Redhat Linux expert who has sufficient experience with OpenVPN and Samba to meet the project's goals of a secure file-sharing system over a virtual private network (VPN).

Project Description

This project requires setting up file sharing over a VPN for a small publishing company.

File sharing will occur between three user groups:

[url removed, login to view] (5)

[url removed, login to view] (3)

[url removed, login to view] (10)

There should be a shared folder corresponding to each of the three user groups; i.e., “editors”, “designers”, and “contributors” folders.

Users in the editors group should be able to add, edit and delete files and folders in all three folders.

Users in the designers group should have read access to all the files and folders in the designers folder, and the ability to add, edit and delete files and folders in their own subfolder (based on their username) in the designers folder.

Contributors should have their own subfolder (based on their username) with the ability to add, edit and delete files only in it.

The users should be able to access the shared folders over the VPN using their file browser of choice; e.g. Windows Explorer. The users do not need access to each others' machines over the VPN, and at the present time, there are no other LANs that need to be connected to the VPN.

The users are approximately equally divided between Mac and Windows XP/Vista with one Linux user.

Our IT staff will be responsible for:

[url removed, login to view] VPN certificates and keys for each user.

[url removed, login to view] installation instructions, certificates, and keys to the users.

[url removed, login to view] as the first line of technical support for the users during the installation process.

The provider will be responsible for:

[url removed, login to view] the OpenVPN [url removed, login to view] and [url removed, login to view] for content and suitability for the project.

[url removed, login to view] the Samba [url removed, login to view] for content and suitability for the project.

[url removed, login to view] the [url removed, login to view] to achieve the file-sharing described above.

[url removed, login to view] written, step-by-step instructions for all additional linux commands, user acounts, configuration, permissions, folder and file creation as needed to meet the project goals. The instructions should be suitable for the existing file system, Linux distribution, OpenVPN, and Samba installations, and should include adequate instructions for managing user accounts after the project is complete.

[url removed, login to view] with written instructions and technical support if additional packages must be installed, or other configuration steps must be taken, to achieve the project goals.

[url removed, login to view] technical support directly to our IT staff as needed to get the VPN and file sharing working for the users.

The server on which the project will be done is a Virtuozzo virtual private server (VPS) running Redhat Linux 2.6.9-023stab044.4-enterprise with a ReiserFS file system, OpenVPN 2.x, and Samba 3.0.10-1.4E.12.2.

OpenVPN is installed and running successfully. The certificate authority and certificates and keys for the editors have been created using "build-pass-key". The Diffie Hellman parameters have been created, and the [url removed, login to view] paths for the certificates, keys, and Diffie Hellman parameters have been set. Startup of OpenVPN is without errors, and with only the following note:

Cannot set tx queue length on tun0: Operation not permitted (errno=1)

The OpenVPN server can be pinged successfully by a remote Linux client.

Samba is installed and running but is only partially configured and has not been tested.

Both OpenVPN and Samba have been configured to restart on reboot.

The project will be considered complete when:

[url removed, login to view] and Samba are configured and running without errors.

[url removed, login to view] current users have successfully connected to the network and are able to access the appropriate folders.

[url removed, login to view] for maintaining users and groups after the contract is complete have been sent to the buyer via email and accepted as being satisfactory.
