Business is one of the oldest recorded means of earning livelihood for the human race. Human beings have been involved in exchange of goods and services ever since the dawn of civilization. The history of business can be most easily divided into three phases – business in pre-industrialized world, business during the industrialization and finally business in the networked world. The advancement of the society, the surge in world population and the technological advancements have influenced humans to come up with novel business ideas and improve upon the existing business techniques and concepts to cope with the demand. However the basics behind any business idea have never changed – gaining customers and generating revenue. However self assessment needs to be done and questions need to be asked before the first step in this direction can be taken.
a. Where does it all begin?
b. Do we have a business plan?
c. Do we have a unique business idea?
d. Do we test waters by starting low profile or otherwise?
e. How much competition is around?
f. Do we have enough revenue?
g. How do we raise the finance if needed?
h. How do we find the most appropriate business premises?
These are some of the questions one has to face and answer, when they want to realize their ever so precious business idea. The answers to these questions serve as the foundation blocks to the business and almost certainly determine the ultimate fate of the business.
However if we analyze deeply we can narrow down our exhaustive list of questions stated above to the following two conclusive set of questions. In other words, if answered properly the following two questions could determine the course and fate of a small business.
1. Should we adopt the Entrepreneurial approach by starting from scratch?
2. Should we franchise an established brand?
Usually there is no hard and fast rule for the success of a business. Different businesses need different combination of ingredients to grow, bloom and produce the results. Scientists and researchers working in this field have often outlined certain key factors which are likely to impact a business in its life span. Here we have picked up some key success factors:

In this study we will focus on getting answers to our Key Questions by focusing and exploring the Key Success Factors. We will aim to analyze the impact of these factors in both the entrepreneurial and the franchised setups. The aim of the study is not to make any conclusive judgements in favour or against entrepreneurship or franchising but to understand the application, impact and role of these factors in the two respective scenarios.
