We are a medical device manufacturer developing the next-generation electronic control box for an existing product. We have received a Statement of Work from an Indian engineering services firm covering PCBA design, firmware development and Engineering Verification Testing, and we want an independent expert opinion on it before we sign. This is a review engagement only — no design work. The device (in summary): mains-connected Class II active medical device. Single integrated 6-layer PCBA with a universal-input mains stage using a certified medical AC/DC module, four isolated AC relay channels, dual isolated 4-wire PT1000 sensing, coolant flow and CT current monitoring, an STM32H7-class MCU with external SDRAM, a 5–7" IPS capacitive touch display running LVGL, an LTE Cat-M1 module (hardware only in this phase), RFID, USB, RS-485 and a thermal printer interface. Firmware under IEC 62304 including a secure bootloader, control logic, alarms, data logging and the associated document set. The design must support certification for the US, EU and Indian markets from a single hardware SKU. What we need from you: A bottom-up sanity check of the effort estimate, work packet by work packet, with your own numbers where you disagree. We are especially interested in the firmware packet and the prototype/bring-up/EVT packet. An assessment of the proposed architecture — is it the right approach for a 60601-1 device, and what would you have done differently? Scope gaps: what is missing that we will end up paying for later, and what is quietly pushed onto us as the customer. A short list of the specific questions and contract changes we should put to the vendor before signing.

Hello, I saw your project involving the medical control box, STM32H7 firmware, 6-layer PCBA, LVGL, isolated interfaces, and IEC 62304/60601-1 requirements. I loved the technical depth and the focus on an independent review before signing the SOW. What do you think if I review the estimate bottom-up and challenge the firmware, bring-up, EVT, architecture, and hidden scope? With 15+ years in embedded systems, STM32 firmware, PCB design, industrial control, sensor integration, communications, and product testing, I can provide an independent engineering assessment rather than simply reviewing the vendor's numbers. I will analyze each work packet and provide my own realistic effort estimates where I disagree, with special attention to: • STM32H7 firmware, bootloader, LVGL, drivers, control logic, alarms and data logging • Prototype bring-up, integration, debugging and EVT • 60601-1 architecture, isolation, EMC/ESD and safety considerations • IEC 62304 development and verification documentation • Missing scope and customer responsibilities that may create future change orders • Specific questions and contract changes to raise before signing My goal is to identify technical, schedule and cost risks before you commit to the vendor. Best regards, Hamza

As an electrical engineer with a deep understanding of embedded systems and a specialty in microcontrollers, I'm confident that I can deliver the robust and thorough independent review your medical device project requires. I've successfully executed similar review engagements for various high-stakes projects, ensuring the developed electronics engineering complies with all appropriate standards. Here's what you can expect from me: Firstly, I will meticulously assess the effort estimate and work packets provided by the Indian engineering firm, focusing particularly on the firmware and prototype development stages. Drawing from my extensive experience, I'll bring a fresh pair of eyes to identify any potential obstacles and scope gaps that may impact your project's efficacy or budget in the future. Secondly, making certain that your design aligns seamlessly with safety requirements like IEC 60601-1 is of utmost importance. I will thoroughly evaluate the proposed architecture and suggest any alternative approaches as needed. With my knowledge of PCB layout design, electronics hardware, and STM32 firmware, I uphold a privileged position in making nuanced judgements on complex design decisions that could affect performance, certification processes, or costs.

You're about to sign a Statement of Work for a Class II 60601-1 device without an independent read on it — that's exactly where most medical product budgets go sideways. I've spent ten years building embedded systems, including certified-class hardware, and I'll give you a bottom-up critique of that SOW, not a summary of it. Here's what I bring to this: → I've shipped end-to-end embedded products — PCB, firmware, enclosure — including ruggedized and safety-adjacent systems, so I know where vendor estimates hide their margin and where they under-scope. → The firmware packet under IEC 62304 is where I'd dig hardest: secure bootloader, control logic, and the document set are routinely under-quoted by 30-50% because the documentation effort is treated as an afterthought. → The prototype/bring-up/EVT packet is the second trap — bring-up of a 6-layer board with SDRAM, a mains stage, and isolated sensing will take 2-3 spins minimum, and I'll check if that's costed in. → Architecture-wise, I'll assess if the single-SKU approach for US/EU/India is realistic given certification differences, and flag anything quietly pushed onto you. My approach: → First, I'll go through the SOW line by line, giving you my own effort numbers where I disagree, especially on firmware and EVT. → Then I'll assess the architecture against 60601-1 realities and list the scope gaps you'll pay for later.
