hello, the phrase works exactly as it does locally is the one that cannot hold, and auth is where it breaks first. locally there is no proxy, no TLS, and the client and API usually share an origin. in production three things change at once: Nginx sits in the middle, cookies suddenly need Secure and the right SameSite value to be stored at all, and Express reports the proxy's address unless trust proxy is set. the symptom is that login appears to succeed and the very next request comes back unauthenticated, with nothing useful in the console. it looks like a code bug and it is a configuration one. that also decides a question worth settling before i touch anything, which is whether the API lives on a subdomain or on a path under the same domain, because the cookie and CORS setup differ. on the 502s you mentioned, they nearly always mean the upstream is not running, and the usual cause is the app crashing on boot over a missing variable while PM2 restarts it in a loop. so PM2 gets set up with logs you can actually read. worth flagging the budget is well below this scope. is Mongo on the VPS or Atlas? API on a subdomain or same domain path? have a nice day.
