The project I would like you to complete for me is to model and texture the entire island of Alcatraz in San Francisco as it looked in the late 1930's. Please find the attached image of a map of Alcatraz for you to have a look at. It will also help us understand what part of the island we are discussing in future.
I need to be able to open the model in my 3ds Max 10 as well as import it into Unity3d. Your work also needs to be 100% original. The last guy that worked on it decided to take someone else's model and pass it off as their own.
I would like it to be high quality, as realistic as possible with as low of a poly count as possible. I think a 250k poly count budget should be enough. When in game I need for my cameras to be able to view the models / textures from a third person camera distance in a good resolution. On the flip side the file size of the textures must also be kept under control to a maximum total of 500Mb. I will let you as the artist decide what you think is best for the balance between texture resolution and file size. Please check out the attached Mafia 2 game screenshots to give you some idea of the overall quality I am looking for.
I saw on your profile that you have experience working for a game company, but I just thought I would mention a few things to think about when modelling specifically for Unity3D (I apologise if you are already familiar with these things - I just want to make sure everything goes smoothly):
- Individual texture files must be no larger than 2048 x 2048. They do not have to be square, .PNG format preferred.
- Keep individual objects below 20k polys maximum, it might be worth modelling individual building faces as separate objects where possible to assist in game occlusion culling and lower the poly counts.
- Every textured object must have a type of UVW modifier attached to map UVW co-ordinates.
- I like things to be named and grouped consistently to make them easier to work with in Unity3D. Also please name textures files the same names as the materials they belong to.
With the terrain part of the island I think it's best to use the inbuilt terrain tools in Unity3D. If you want to import things into Unity3D and do this yourself it would be a massive help to me and I'm sure you could do a much better job than I. The terrain tools are very easy to use, however this is optional and I will understand if you do not. In this case you can just use a generic grass / rock texture on a rough modelled terrain and leave it for me to do.
You do not need to worry about:
- Texture baking
- Detailed terrain texturing (mentioned above)
I suggest we set up the milestones as follows:
£112.50 - Main Prison / Dining Hall / Admin Block + Recreation Yard completed.
£112.50 - Building 64 + Wardens House + Lighthouse + Bachelor Quarters + Family Quarters + Associate Warden + Residential Cottages completed.
£112.50 - New Industries + Model Industries + Powerhouse + Quartermaster + Officers Club completed.
£112.50 - Everything else completed and finished models delivered.
Let me know what you think of these.
I think that's everything you need to know about the project. Of course if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
