Salesforce to nodjs JWT authentication

In this above use case salesforce would be sending a request to node js application hosted on heroku, trying to authenticate post request using JWT token send out from salesforce to heroku and node js application to validate it.
Salesforce: Created a self-signed certificate and signing using JWS class to generate a token.
Node.js: Not able to verify the signature. Using npm jsonwebtoken
