Design a circuit with the following requirements: - ATmega 8/328 MCU (or similar, e.g. TI MSP-430) - Battery powered by 4xAA non-rechargeable batteries - MCU must be aware of battery voltage (to show remaining battery level) - RTC - designed in KiCAD, including BOM - 4 push buttons (labelled "mode", "+", -", "ok") - 1 input for limit switch - 1 relay output able to switch 500mA @ 6 VDC - LCD display without backlight, 16x2 characters Context: This will be part of a device to open gates automatically at a user defined time of day. Important factors are low power consumption and robustness. The device will be used outside in cold winters and hot summers. First stage of the project is a proof-of-concept circuit, where form factor is not yet of any importance. The project should be easy to fabricate by a hobbyist (i.e. Through-Hole mounted). Questions that come to mind is how to efficiently power the MCU (which takes less than 6V) while also providing full battery voltage (up to 6V) for the output.
