I am looking for some help to redesign the index page of my site. I have attached two jpegs of the site, with the details stripped out. If i accept your bid i will send you the html files in case that makes it easier for you. Please bid only on the design work...not the HTML coding. More details at the bottom. I have tested this current interface with users and they generally dont like it. The general sentiment is that it is overly complicated. THE GOAL: My site is an ecommerce site that makes gift recommendations. The user has to provide certain information and i will then make the recommendations. I need a better interface for inputting the required information REQUIRED SUBMISSION: Currently users can choose from lists of values from List 1 and List 2 (as many as they want, but at least 2 from each) and those chosen are printed in Box 1 and Box 2 above and can be removed by unchecking the checkbox or clicking the X. Currently there are over 30 values in Lists 1 and 2 each. I dont want a huge list of all the values because that is overwhelming for users. So for now i show some of the most popular ones at the top and then the rest under the expandable div but there may be a better answer. Eventually there could be as many as 75 values in each list...so the challenge is to think of a good way for people to browse through all of them if they want, but also to be able to quickly pick a couple and get started. The user must also give me the information requested in Box 3. We also need room for small links in the header and footer. We also need space to display a couple of logos of websites i link to. We also need some space to print errors in form validation. Most error messages are approx 10 words long. However, multiple errors may occur on the same submission
OTHER GUIDANCE: People have told me they think the Box 1 and Box 2 interface is unnecessary, confusing and takes up too much space. It seems like they would rather just have a list of values , pick some and go from there. But if you use some sort of paging for the extra values, then there needs to be some way for users to know the full list of what they have selected even if they are browsing a different part of the list. Maybe the concept is right, but needs to be less prominent? One idea may be to arrange the inputs as three horizontally oriented lists stacked on top of each other with the summary and submit button on the right side. The current design is not space efficient. The borders around the page and in the individual divs take up too much valuable page space. Please use a white background Please do not reuse the picture. It is a placeholder. I think the front page will need some sort of graphic but you should recommend something as part of your design. Please design for a 1024x768 resolution...but make sure it is still usable at 800x600. The user needs to be able to see all three boxes (but not all of the values for list 1 and 2) and the submit button without scrolling SAMPLE SITES: Here are a couple of sites whose pages i like: [url removed, login to view]: This site has a really nice index page. It is clean, simple and visually appealing. I like the large graphic with the menu overlqy. We are designing our internal pages to look similar to endless .com product category pages. [url removed, login to view]: Again, simple and clean. Little wasted space and the focus is on the information the user needs to provide to get started. This page is probably a bit too simple for an ecommerce site though. Here are a couple of related sites that i dont like: Gifts.com. Much too much clutter. difficult for user to know where to focus and start [url removed, login to view]: Also too much clutter though they manage to keep the form as the highlight. MORE DETAILS ABOUT WORK REQUIRED: Since i am opening this bid publicly, please realize that i will be receiving many ideas from people as part of their proposals. It is up to you how much detail you provide me before i accept your bid...obviously the more detail, the more likely i am to accept your bid. It is also likely that multiple people will be submitting proposals with similar ideas as yours...so you must be comfortable with the notion that some of your ideas may get implemented (because the person whose bid we accept also submitted them or they are ideas my team already has in mind) but you might not get paid for those ideas. If this is not acceptable, please do not submit a proposal. 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.
