I am looking for a way to display Japanese kanji characters in a specific font in Flash while keeping the .swf file size small. Since I only pass in a few Japanese characters at a time into my flash application, ideally the individual kanji fonts for those characters only would be pulled in dynamically and embedded at runtime. Embedding the whole kanji font set with all the characters would make the Flash file size too large.
For an example of how it would be used, I have a basic English-to-Japanese dictionary search page where a user can enter an English word and retrieve a list of Japanese equivalents. I want to let the user click on any of the Japanese words and display a nicer version (using a calligraphy font) of the word in Flash. For each word only a few character fonts are needed, so I don’t want to have to load a flash file with all the kanji characters embedded in it.
