NEED: to provide access to all sorts of rich media. without being converted; must play nonlocal files: mp3, mpg, wmv, wma, and also display swf, jpg & gif.. design: is unessential; what counts is small size, well functioning buffering & reliability. flashplayer usually require mp3 or mpg firrst being imported by mx & exported as swf. since this does not make sense in terms of "any media located anywhere in the world", this is not the good solution for us. imagine: YOU have a not copyright protected video on YOUR homepage ..and I just want to put a link to this video on MY homepage (by NOT calling up YOUR hole website, but just retrieve/display it in our own "media-player", which is a steady (fix) embedded element of our webplatform (an html frame).
so: the "mediaplayer" (in fact: progressive downloader) which we seek, works with **nonlocal media** stored anywhere in the world & is able of buffering. & directly works with the codec (decoders) that are (allready) installed on the visitors computer. if missing codec, it should display a message (possibly w. download instruction/link)
our current (but now obsolete) solution can still be seen at _[login to view URL] ..but ONLY: if you do NOT have the latest security updates from microsoft installed; ..using windows & ms _internet explorer_. click at "business-connector" and then at "business-guru" (some loading time, since java applet..). next to this applet on the right hand is a frame called: [login to view URL], which could play/display quite everything. this [login to view URL] frame containes:
1 a flashplayer,
2 commands for the windows mediaplayer which directly used the built in codecs for mp3, mpg, wma, wmv etc., and
3 a html displaying pictures or even powerpoint..
most important: plugin is not desired (except flash & jvm 1.4.1 which we use anyway).
in other words: all media should play within one frame
