I have a UK business database with 1.2 million companies listed. **To calculate the shortest distance to nearby businesses, latitude and longitude data should be inserted into each address in the database**.
You need to write a script to query and fetch geocodes from a free geocoding service provider or website. And also run it to get geocodes for all addresses in the database. To speed it up, it would be even better if multiple ceocoding engines are queried at same time and multiple hosting accounts are used.
Please note, Google doesn't provide geocoding service for UK currently. You need to find out one or more geocoding providers or websites yourself.
