Either Tiny MCE, Joomla or a plug-in called community builder automatically inserts <br /> tags into the text editor field on the user profile edit page even when no content is being added.
These break tags are then inserted into the database when the profile is updated. Since the fields in the database are not empty (containing <br /> tags now) code that checks for values in a field finds content. This means I have a lot of instances of titles being displayed but no real content to go with them.

I have cleaned all the tags out of the database manually but obviously this is not a reasonable solution as every time the client updates a profile the break tags will be re-inserted.
My preferred solution would be the correct code to check for instances of <br> OR ""
something like:
if (($row["cb_publications"] != '') || ($row["cb_publications"] != '<br />'))
{ echo "<p><strong>Publications</strong>:<br />".$row["cb_publications"]."</p>";
}
which doesn't actually work (I just need some code that does). I am using a customized page to display the profile information because the Community Builder page was not terribly customizable either.
The other solution is to solve the problem at the back end and not have the break tags insert into the database. I've looked for where that is and am stumped.
An example of a profile page can be found here: [login to view URL]~westonpa/[login to view URL]
The problem wont be visible because I've cleaned the break tags out - just picture one of the areas displaying a title but no content
