A nonprofit organization with an existing but technologically outdated website is looking for someone to create a custom website template and structure to our specifications, using a content management system like Joomla. We will transfer existing content to the site and update new information - all we are looking for is the template and the structure.
We are a housing rights organization. Users come to our site for different reasons - one of which is simply to find out about the organization, another is to get updates on what our current projects and activities are, but most commonly, people seek us out for answers to questions about their rights. We also publish a newspaper which we archive on the site, but we want to make the browsing or searching of past issues, articles, or subject categories, easier.
Basic look of the site:
* static banner on the top;
* navigational menu on the left that changes to show the hierarchy of pages in the site when you are in an internal page;
* content in a middle column, with each page showing where the page is in the hierarchy of internal pages (such as: Main > Topic A > Subtopic 3 > Sub-Sub-Topic G > Sub-Sub-Sub topic 5 ) - and suggestions (that we provide) about other related topics
* Column to the right with 'teaser' that changes - encouraging people to donate to our group, telling them about the latest news, or suggesting topics for them to learn more about - possibly based on their searches
* static banner on the bottom with our contact info
We have written in greater detail the features that we specifically want on the site - including specifications for search features, and for having content organized in different categories on the site.
We are NOT looking for flashy or slick stuff... nor do we need any help with graphics. We are not looking for any features that are not already common on websites.
We DO have pictures visually depicting what we want the site to look like. We want to work with someone who will be willing to discuss ideas and ask us whether what they've done is what we wanted. We want someone who will make suggestions if they think that they have a better idea than what we have.
We want to work with a coder on an as-we-go basis... try a feature, see how it works, then add the next feature. In doing so, we will not be adding additional requirements... just leaving open the possibility for slight revisions as we go. Features we want: users able to search either or whole site, or certain sections (i.e. only questions about their rights, or only back issues of our newspaper) or to browse. We want a search feature somewhat like 'google suggest' - but where we prioritize the suggestions... a bit more like what happens at this when you search for words site: [url removed, login to view] To facilitate searches, we may want to break our content up into small sections and possibly assign multiple titles to the same page - and tag/key words for the search feature) so that people can find their info better. (Example: the same content would have multiple titles: "getting your landlord to make repairs" or "what do I do if my landlord won't make repairs" or "can I withhold rent to force my landlord to make repairs" or "how to get conditions fixed in your apartment" or "what are my rights to get conditions repaired?" - etc.) The front page should have a small section with updates/teasers, somewhat like a recent blog post, but this would be a small portion of the page, with the rest static content. We want to have a blog or blog-like page within the site, but not on the front page A key feature of this should be that it is easy to update the site with new info, and to add new sections or reorganize content according to the structure that the coder has helped set up.
