Hardware lock removal
We currently have a hardware lock device or "dongle" which is used by an old design software package to protect it from piracy. This anti-piracy technique works well. Unfortunately we are very concerned about the lock device becoming lost or stolen. I own the software and I own the dongle.
Our operating system is windows 98 and the dongle is exposed to the public. If it lost or stolen it could result in lost production and down time, costing our organization valuable time, resources and money let alone the software and the thousands of hours of input.
We have investigated in the past a solution that I will call a 'dongle emulator'. A dongle emulator would allow us to run our software without the dongle connected to our computer. This application does not make any changes to our software package. There are 4 companies in the US providing such a service, but I do not trust them. One such company is softkey solutions.
The use of such emulating software is legal under our current license, with or without the dongle attached.
Since we own the dongle we could leave it in the machine during startup and then remove it for emulation every day. The program is old, 1995. Support for this program is no longer available. We are very concerned about theft or failure and require help.
