I have existing code that connects to my web site and downloads a number of files to a client's computer.
The existing code works as follows: - connects with the pass-worded directory on the site(server), downloads a text file with version information on the available files on the server, compares the version on the server to the version on the client's machine, creates a list of files with newer version numbers, connects to the site and downloads only the files which have newer version numbers.
This involves between 1 and 5 re-connects and is less efficient than I would like.
During the download, the user does not receive any indication of continuing progress until individual files have been completely downloaded, as the coding does not allow breaks for updating a progress meter. This is a problem, particularly when the file being downloaded is large.
I would like the user to have a frequently updating display of a progress bar, showing which file is being downloaded, bytes downloaded, speed and bytes remaining.
Here is an analysis by a coder who examined the project but is too busy to accept it:
"If you want to track the progress of the transfer, then you should use FtpOpenFile function and then use the InternetReadFile.
With InternetReadFile you could then call to the BytesRead flag.
Once you have Bytes read on an on going transfer the rest is cake.
Currently it is using the GetFile function and that is a quick and valid solution but long term when you want more from it such as this. It will not suffice.
So the module essentially has to be re written to use the InetRead functions"
Part 2. When the code initially connects with the website, I would like the code to pass an identifier which can be checked against a list which will determine if that user is eligible to download files from the site. This list would probably be maintained in a mysql database. I require a method (form) to maintain this list on the site(server).
