1. ENGL_1011_A03_202425 2. Assignments Overview 3. Assignment 3: Poetry Explication Essay (15%) Assignment 3: Poetry Explication Essay (15%) Completion requirements To do: Make a submission To do: Receive a grade Assignment 3 is worth 15% of your final grade. The focus for Assignment 3 is essentially the same as it was in Assignment 2a, but instead of writing a discussion forum post, you will now revise and expand your post into a fully developed poetry explication essay of about 600 to 750 words. Instructions Recommend steps are as follows: Step 1: Draft an outline for your paper. To do this, you should review your post and identify ideas that need further development. Do you have two or three separate ideas? Can each become the focus of a body paragraph? Did a classmate's response to your post suggest avenues for further development? Be sure to settle on a particular claim from Babiak's essay. Step 2: Write an introduction. Introduce the poem and the claim from Babiak's essay that you have chosen for your explication. Step 3: Compose a thesis. The thesis statement should make a claim about your poem and how it connects to the claim you selected from Babiak's essay. Be sure to say why or how the two connect. For example: It is not enough to say, "Eliot's poem 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' structures our sense of time and space." You need to identify exactly how the poem does this, and name those methods in your thesis statement. This is a better thesis sentence: "In 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,' Eliot exposes the failure of mundane domestic routines to answer existential and spiritual questions, thus characterizing urban life in the early 1900s." Notice that you don't need to mention Babiak or quote from his essay in the thesis statement itself. In fact, it's better to use your own words in your thesis. Step 4: Develop your paper. Feel free to repurpose material from your original post, revising and expanding it, perhaps responding to or building on feedback received from your classmates. In literary analysis, it is crucial to use direct quotations as textual evidence to support your claims, so be sure to incorporate quotations from your chosen poem. Step 5: Check the assignment marking criteria. Ensure you have included all of the required elements and have used MLA style for the assignment format, in-text citations and works cited page. Refer to the Assignment 3: Grading Criteria. Assignment 3: Grading Criteria A – excellent B – good C – satisfactory D – minimal pass F – does not pass Thesis and Introduction: Introduces poem and Babiak's article.
