I work as a visual artist. My project is based upon the goal that a houseplant control motor actuators. More info about the project can be found here: [login to view URL] Two differential signals (four electrodes) are collected from the plant's leafs. The signals goes to a raspberry pi by a ads1115 16-bit adc. The goal is that the plant, as far as it is possible, control the motor actuators (robot legs). I want a machine learning/ann solution to interpret the signals and choose between available actuator movements. The python script at [login to view URL] defines possible movements based on the physical construction. Regarding the machine learning code I see that different possible solutions are suggested by various papers dealing with a similar problem when prosthetics are trying to classify emg signals to motor movements. I believe unsupervised classification is desired since there is no way to classify a plant's electrophysiology to this project's goals (to move robot legs in some autonomous way). I see that autoencoder configurations have been used to reduce/abstract in an unsupervised way. Convolutional network in conjunction with k-means and autoencoder ([login to view URL]), and extreme learning machine based autoencoder ([login to view URL]) are two configurations I have seen. Another solution I have noticed are network based wavelet transform classification ([login to view URL]). It should be noticed that I do not have any particular knowledge in machine learning, signal processing and so forth. The goal is mainly a conceptually sound treatment of the signals from the houseplant by the motor actuators.

Hey, I just tried to take a look at your plantoid project in Hackathon but the link appears to be down. Regardless, based on your description here I'd very much like to help you out with this project. I noticed you mentioned unsupervised learning is preferred, so I imagine you have no labels associated with the data that's coming in from the Pi, is that right? I'd love to chat and learn a little bit more about your project in depth. Having taken a look at your github and the possible actions, if I'm understanding right with the lack of labels my approach would be the following. There's no specific ground truth in here, so I would first try to create a cluster of actions based on the two signals you have coming in and then assign each of those clusters to a specific action. I'm a researcher at North Carolina State University and my current research deals with this kind of time series data, specifically the approach I came up with is a Convolutional Autoencoder for working with unlabeled human physiological data and it would be amazing to apply it to plants. First and foremost, It is important to structure the problem rather than looking for algorithms to solve. Once we identify the problem and structure at the data, we can identify the suitable algorithms and compare them to identify the best one. The problem you are looking at, would be similar to path follower and reinforcement learning would be the best approach. Let me know if you would be interested in discussing more. Vinayaka.
