Hi, I'm Evan. I work as a Fractional (part-time) Chief Technical Officer (CTO), helping several high-growth technical startups scale their product, technical architecture, and engineering teams as their early-stage businesses take off. I’ve been hands-on building new software products for 15 years with responsibilities ranging from developing major new codebases, architecting distributed systems, and mentoring other software developers from junior to senior promotions.
I have taken over a Ruby 2.5.7 and Rails 4.2.11 codebase that is running well on Heroku with a PostgreSQL database that needs to be updated to a modern Rails version so we can continue to add new features and address user-facing bugs. The ideal candidate will have many years of experience with Ruby on Rails and already be familiar with some of the challenges and changes needed to complete major version updates of existing code.
I am expecting to work directly with a software developer to review and understand what changes are needed in this existing code so that we can make a plan together. This is an hourly project so that you are appropriately paid for as we work through unknown surprises that we discover together.
This Rails codebase has 14,068 lines of code with 23 models and 20 views. There are 12,835 lines of tests already in place covering the major business logic, including vcr_cassettes replay for external API dependencies. [login to view URL] is attached so you can see the era of dependency versions that we’re currently working with.
