We are creating a Wordpress web site that needs user authentication. There will be local users created on the site, but upon creation they will be validated against a pre-existing database based on name and ID#. Once this validation occurs, the user account will be created on the web site (email/password), which will be used from then on for that user. The (MS SQL) database exists on our internal server that is behind a firewall. This posting is only with regards to the user validation/creation. The rest of the web site will be handled separately.
This validation can be done one of two ways:
1. Create a web service that listens for (authenticated) incoming requests for validation of names/IDs. This would return a yes/no answer indicating if the name/ID combination is valid and the Wordpress site would then create the account.
2. Synchronize any changes in the local database with one that is stored on the web server, and the web site would check against its own database.
Please let me know which of the two you would implement and why, or if you have a third solution.
