An 11.5 ft cantilever at 9 ft height without posts? That’s not something you “hope” works—you engineer it right or it becomes a liability. That’s exactly where I come in. I’ll deliver a structurally sound, code-compliant deck design tailored to Minnesota regulations, properly analyzing that cantilever using the right framing strategy, load distribution, and connection detailing—especially with Prowood Trueframe and composite finishes in mind. The goal: clean, open space for lounging without compromising safety. I focus on buildable, inspector-friendly drawings that get approved, not questioned. If you’re serious about doing this right the first time, send over your sketch and details—I’ll take it from concept to engineered confidence.

Hi, I reviewed your requirement and the critical challenge here is the 11.5 ft cantilever, this isn’t a standard deck detail and needs proper structural validation, not assumptions. This will require a code-compliant structural design that balances load distribution, material strength, and safety, especially at 9 ft elevation without relying on posts. I can develop a clean, buildable design that aligns with Minnesota codes, ensures structural integrity, and still maintains the open, relaxed aesthetic you’re aiming for. The focus will be on precise framing strategy, connection detailing, and material optimization so it performs long-term, not just on paper. Once we connect, I can walk you through how this cantilever can realistically be achieved and what constraints to expect. Best regards, Muskan

Hi, I’ve reviewed your project and understand you’re looking for a Minnesota-licensed structural engineer to design a 9 ft high composite raised deck using Prowood Trueframe lumber, with the key challenge being the 11.5 ft cantilever at the house where you’d prefer to avoid posts. I can develop a code-compliant structural deck design around that constraint, including framing layout, member sizing, connections, lateral support, and permit-ready notes aligned with Minnesota residential code requirements. The rough sketches and photos will help verify the geometry, but the cantilever condition will need careful load-path review so the final solution is safe, durable, and still works as a clean relaxation/lounge space. If the no-post approach is structurally feasible, I’ll document it clearly; if not, I’ll provide the least intrusive engineered alternative rather than forcing a risky layout. Is the existing house ledger/band joist condition already exposed or documented, and will you need Minnesota-stamped permit drawings for submission to your local building department? I can review the attachments and provide a clear design path with stamped drawings once the site assumptions are confirmed. Best regards, Atik

As a licensed Structural Engineer registered in Minnesota, I have designed numerous raised deck systems specifically optimized for our state’s rigorous snow load requirements and frost heave considerations. Having recently completed a similar composite deck project in the Twin Cities area, I am well-versed in the specific deflection limits required to prevent the "bouncy" feel often associated with heavier composite materials like Trex or Azek. I understand the importance of balancing structural integrity with the aesthetic requirements of high-end composite finishes to ensure a durable, permit-ready result that lasts through our extreme seasonal cycles. My technical approach begins with a comprehensive lateral load analysis and pier foundation design tailored to local soil conditions to ensure long-term stability against frost. I will utilize RISA-3D to model the framing plan, specifically focusing on the increased dead loads of composite decking and the necessary joist spacing—typically 12 inches on center—to meet both manufacturer specifications and IRC requirements. The final deliverable will include a signed and sealed set of structural drawings, featuring detailed post-to-beam connections, ledger flashing specifications, and stair stringer reinforcements that strictly comply with the 2020 Minnesota Residential Code. I prioritize clear, contractor-friendly annotations to facilitate a smooth permitting process with your local building department. Do you already have a preliminary footprint or a preferred composite brand in mind, and what is the approximate height of the finished floor above grade? I’d be happy to discuss these details or any specific site constraints via chat to ensure the design aligns with your vision. Let me know if you'd like to hop on a brief call to align on the project timeline and specific permit requirements.

Hello, I’m an experienced structural engineer with a strong background in elevated deck engineering, cantilever framing, and residential structural design. I can help engineer your deck to safely frame around the 11.5 ft house cantilever while minimizing or potentially eliminating posts in that area through engineered framing solutions. A deck 9 ft above grade with this level of cantilever requires careful analysis of ledger loads, backspan ratios, lateral stability, uplift, and connection detailing, especially under Minnesota snow and live loads. Minnesota decks are generally designed for at least 40 psf live load, require permits when attached/elevated, and frost footings commonly extend to 42 inches or deeper depending on jurisdiction. I can provide: • Structural analysis of the 11.5 ft cantilever condition • Framing options using Prowood Trueframe and composite decking • Beam, joist, ledger, and connection design • Footing and lateral bracing layout • Permit-ready structural drawings and calculation package • Coordination for Minnesota code compliance and permit submission I’ve worked on elevated deck projects involving engineered cantilevers, concealed support framing, and architecturally clean lounge spaces where minimizing posts was a key design goal. Timeline: Initial structural concept within 2–3 days after reviewing your sketch, dimensions, and site photos. I’m confident I can develop a safe, elegant, and code-compliant deck solution for your project.
