As a part of a multi-language travel guide project, I am looking for a dedicated translator who can help us out with a 200.000 word translation from English into Spanish (Latin American).
The translation will need to be done in batches. The first batch is ready: it contains 8827 words (6781 words without repetitions). The rest will be flowing steadily between now and the end of April. Source texts are very general destination descriptions in easy-going, non-technical language (later batches) and site menu items, also not technical (this batch).
200.000 words is an estimate of the future wordcount. The source texts are still being written, so we cannot yet supply you with the final size of the job. This is the reason we would like you to mention 30 USD as the price, while mentioning your price per word in the PMB.
There are a few things that are mandatory with regard to this translation:
- You must use Wordfast (or Trados). Wordfast is a translation memory software for Word. It will help you ‘remember’ the words you used for previous translations (very handy for big jobs) and streamlines the whole job. Also, it saves you from rewriting word you have already translated. It can be found on [url removed, login to view] and costs 250 USD. This is a requirement for this job. You will surely find this a good buy, especially if you translate many texts that include code (like websites - not this case): it filters out the translatable parts.
- Another very useful tool included in Wordfast (and Trados) is the analysis tool. This allows you to predict how many of the total amount of words you will need to actually translate, and how many are already in the translation memory. This is why we would like you to tell us your price per ‘new word’ (completely new translation) and per ‘fuzzy match’ (the string of words has already been translated). Usually, we pay 66% of the new word price for a fuzzy match.
- Due to the size and the type of project this is, we will not be able to pay for any words that have already been translated (100% matches), nor for repetitions. The words that are in the translation memory will not need to be re-written, so no work is involved on your side. Please state that you agree with this practice.
- The text in this first batch is partially colour coded. Certain words are blue, other are grey. This colour scheme needs to be maintained.
This is the Wordfast analysis for the first batch:
Analogy segments words char. %
Repetitions 481 2046 11814 23%
100% 0 0 0 0%
95%-99% 0 0 0 0%
85%-94% 0 0 0 0%
75%-84% 0 0 0 0%
_0%-74% 1670 6781 39351 77%
Total 2151 8827 51165
The choice of the translator will depend very much on the proposed price per word. Please keep in mind that the source texts are being written at 0,01 USD per word. It will be impossible to pay an agency-level price per word in this case, but then again, the proposed amount of work is rather large.
Thank you for bidding on this project.
