Why don't you make use of one of the OpenSource packages that are available also for Windows, not just for Linux systems. I would be glad to help you to find an appropriate product with capacilities to import the existing Excel data.

I have extensive knowledge of Excel in general including formulas, macros and vba programming. My passion for programming started with Excel and I used Excel in my graduate thesis (artificial intelligence optimization). I am very familiar with Excel's shortfalls, and as such, your problem with it is all too familiar. Based on my experience and limited knowledge of your problem I am of the opinion that your problem is actually Excel itself. Excel was not developed for complex long term use and as such increase data and cell formula use increases the Excel file, which in turn slows down the operations/calculations affecting the sequence in which these operations are performed and then you start getting strange/erroneous results and/or error prompts. There are several alternatives including maintaining the Excel interface as a frontend that you are comfortable with but utilizing another software under the hood that can better deal with complex data processing and calculation.
